I thoroughly enjoy working with people to help them increase their mathematical proficiency. With over three years of individualized private tutoring experience and a Master’s in Secondary Education, my primary focus is teaching Mathematics. After completing my education at the university level, I am now in the process of obtaining TEFL Certification. When I am not studying, I most frequently assist students with math that ranges from basic computational skills from grade 6, onward through Pre-Calculus. Since beginning my tutoring practice three years ago, I have decided to expand by tutoring students online. Pairing programs together such as Zoom and Ziteboard.com allows me to share a screen and whiteboard simultaneously with students.
With over four years of individualized private tutoring experience and a Masters in Education in Teaching Mathematics, I primarily focus on assisting students with math that ranges from computational skills ranging from grade 6 through Pre-Calculus.
Online tutoring is essential because it not only allows me to assist more students each day, but also helps students reach their full potential in learning by breaking down sessions into shorter, more manageable time frames. Like with anything, to truly excel in learning, daily practice is essential. As your tutor, I will provide you with the most up to date teaching material and methods; we can either work on your curriculum, or I can provide learning resources. Regardless of what you choose, if you'd like to further expand your knowledge, you will gain access to a wide range of curriculum materials used throughout Washington State Schools which cover grades 5 - 12.
I have discovered, through both formal and informal education, that to teach most effectively, defining values to both students and their families creates a classroom where dynamic learning occurs frequently. Values create community within the school, the classroom, and with the families of the students. To begin with, our identities play a major role in determining how we interact with one another. To value the identity of my students, I will respect them by teaching toward their personal and professional interests. This facilitates a positive learning environment by giving students the agency to feel empowered in their learning.
Creating an engaging learning environment which allows students to have more control motivates them to actively participate both now and in their future. I value giving students control to make decisions, to ask questions, and to lead discussions within the classroom. To give students even more control over their learning outcomes, I plan to give them ample time to explore concepts and complete work in group settings in the classroom. I have also found students to be most successful in their coursework when paired with interactive online learning activities. Some students find that learning strictly online works best for them and I want to honor their learning preferences as best as possible. Staying updated on current trends and technology is critical to successfully teach in the digital age.
While student agency within the classroom is crucial, it is also necessary for students to be led with a sense of purpose. Making connections with students allows us to have a mutual understanding of the necessity of knowing operations in mathematics. Empowering students through mathematics is crucial for their deeper understanding of the world around them.
Having the opportunity to teach students about content which is relevant to them is key to active engagement in content; increasing the likelihood of further learning in their future. Usually there are several ways to solve mathematical problems. Knowing not only how but why solutions work helps students gain the conceptual understanding necessary to critically engage with material.
Like with anything, to truly excel in mathematics, daily practice is essential. Once hired, your students and faculty will be afforded with tools necessary for learning and communication. The University of Washington has provided the most up to date teaching material and methods, and I plan to apply them on a daily basis. Thank you sincerely for your consideration to be a part of your teaching and learning community.
Sincerely,
Jeromy Roach
