As an undergraduate at Hampshire College, I studied Classics through the Five College Consortium with a heavy concentration in Latin and ancient Greek. After graduating, I was able to translate my love of language into a Latin teaching position on Cape Cod. There I was able to employ my enthusiasm for Latin and to generate a respect and regard for the language and Roman culture from my students. This passion of mine brought forth engaging classes and trained students to become more sensitive readers and writers. My lessons always strove to demonstrate the relevance of Latin in our modern world and to show its significant role in shaping other languages and influencing Western culture and thought. After moving to Florida after three years of teaching English on the island of Curacao, I became at tutor at Palm Beach International Academy, which catered primarily to student-athletes. During my three years at PBIA, both in-house and via Skype, I tutored dozens of students in several subjects, many of which were virtual high school courses offered through university programs. Throughout my 12 years of teaching and tutoring, I have successfully implemented modifications to curricula in order to meet the academic needs of students from a wide range of backgrounds and learning styles. My experience, both in the classroom and online as a tutor, has well-equipped me to facilitate a targeted, personalized approach to learning, while stimulating students’ appreciation for the target subject.
