I am writing with great interest in becoming a tutor with Join Tutors. I believe that my dedication, education, and experience working as a teacher in underserved and rural areas will contribute to your school and the teaching profession.
I graduated from Bowdoin College in 2016 with a double major in mathematics and biology. As an undergraduate, I tutored elementary-aged students in math and reading to remediate them back to grade level. I was then selected to join Teach for America, a nonprofit organization that recruits passionate and motivated students to serve as teachers in underserved and under-resourced areas in the United States. I was hired as a second-grade teacher at Gaston Elementary School in Northampton County, a rural area of North Carolina. This is a Title 1 elementary school where 86% of students perform below grade level. In addition to creating my own curriculum map and lesson plans for reading, math, social studies, and science, I developed an after-school voluntary tutoring program for lower performing second-graders, where I tutored two classes of 15 second-graders for two hours, three times a week. At the beginning of the year, the majority of my students entered second grade at a preschool or kindergarten level. By the end of each year, I was proud to see the growth of my students. All students passed their year-end math tests. Furthermore, in reading and writing, all students significantly improved and were at a second to fifth grade reading level. Last August, I relocated to Madison, WI and was hired to teach second-grade at Bridges Elementary School in Sauk Prairie School District. I teach all academic areas including reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Additionally, I have continued to tutor students in grades K-3.
The inability for children to go to school at this time breaks my heart and deeply concerns me. Therefore, I would like to provide extra tutoring support to any interested families. My work has demonstrated to me the impact I can have in a child’s educational experience and, more importantly, on their idea of self-worth and outlook on their future.
