Greetings, I am excited for the opportunity to apply for the tutoring position; I believe I would be an excellent match. My diverse career inside and outside of classrooms has given me a broad cultural perspective I use to enrich how I teach English, history and rhetoric, and I have always positively supported not only my students but also my coworkers. As the son of a Soviet émigré, I was immersed in Russian language and Jewish culture. As a James Monroe Scholar at the College of William and Mary, I majored in classical civilization and I minored in art history. As an employed graduate, I completed most courses towards a Master’s in Education Arts at Augsburg University. For nine years I coached speech and then debate at Orono High School with an emphasis on the value of substance and impact. I helped students improve their research, logic, editing, speaking and confidence. I judged dozens of tournaments and coached state champions. I taught high school English in rural Japan for three years by adapting to significant cultural and linguistic differences. I taught independently and collaboratively by designing engaging lesson plans, and I encouraged cross-cultural communication during classes and in extracurricular conversation clubs. Uniquely among other foreign teachers, I also occasionally taught world history by request. Furthermore, I coached students preparing for international speaking competitions, collegiate exams as well as advanced scientific research presentations. I moved back to Minneapolis in March to complete my graduate degree while working full time. I believe my experience as well as my passion for English, social sciences and communication can bolster your commitment to inspiring instruction.
