Dear Hiring Personnel:
Please accept this letter of interest and enclosed resume as application for the Tutor position you have available. I’m confident you will find me to be a dedicated, flexible, and motivated community advocate and facilitator who is well qualified to provide the support to successfully serve the target community.
From a very young age I have been passionate to help those in need. My first job was only two years after having emigrating from Nicaragua to the United States. I’m an example of those who have lived the “American Dream.” Being a member of the underserved community, I was lucky to be exposed to key mentors who motivated me to help those “like me.” I completed my bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a focus in Public Administration with the intent to positively and productively work in public organizations that promote public health. Coming from a family of educators who believed that education is change, urged me to seek and complete my teaching credential. I have worked in the education realm since 2004 to 2010. I worked as a teacher assistant and became a teacher. I worked to inspire youngsters in the Los Angeles County to study and become professional members in their communities.
I transitioned to the education arena to the nonprofit sector to advocate for the homeless community with basic rights and skills with a goal to obtain and retain permanent housing. My team assisted the chronically homeless population in the Watts Area, South Los Angeles obtain housing and provided quality supportive and wrap around services to connect them back to society. My agency was a primary advocate to the LA Mayor’s office to increase the budget to house the chronically homeless with mental and physical disabilities and pass proposition HHH.
As a Program Manager, I have had the opportunity to provide training the case management team to meet program target performances for the past eight years. Our program has thrived in assisting clients to return to the workplace, get an education, and volunteer in their communities with on-going case management services. I’ve provided on-going training to existing and new staff in order to promote higher supportive services to working with clients with challenging behaviors such as: Harm Reduction, Trauma Informed Care, Critical Time Intervention, Vicarious Trauma, Boundaries and Ethics, Documentation Training, just to name a few. Working with the chronically homeless and veterans population has allowed me to interact with a wide range of different ethnic backgrounds and most importantly being culturally sensitive to approach their needs. Our current founders HACLA, LAHSA, and Housing for Health under Department of Health Services (DHS), has scored my program as a high performing agency due to successfully passing audits and meeting program targets.
Throughout my working experience, I have polished a great deal of skills that enable me to assist and supervise staff; families and students. Aside from providing training, my day to day operations required me to run and turn in various reports to founders, monitor HMIS and CHAMP data entry and integrity from the team of case managers; and write request for proposals. I also regularly met with similar agencies in the area to provide awareness and advocacy to public officials in order to improve the programs and housing developments. I constantly updated the program protocols and procedures due to program changes and program requirements.
Working with this population requires of a very experienced and special person with fresh and attainable goals. I believe that my skills and experience will be of great asset to your company. I would like to be given the opportunity to utilize my management skills to serve and support the program, as it’s an area that I look forward pursuing. I’m an exited to utilize my education, experience, and enthusiasm and improve best learning practices.
Thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Milerna Castillo
