I was eight years old when I started looking for antique furniture. I saw an end table from the mid 1800's that had multiple layers of paint. It took time, but it is sitting in my front room beside a loveseat and chair from the same era. A few years later, I found a 1966 Mustang Fastback in the junk yard. It is sitting in my garage. It took many years to pull it together, but it was worth it. I was teaching at a school on the border of Mexico and the students, mostly freshmen, were very concerned that they did not have enough background to do well in the class. I assured them that they were very capable, but I did pull together a scaffolding strategy to help them see what made cultures and people successful. They performed well on the TAAS test in the early 1990's. My daughter was born while I was in Texas and nine months later she was hit with spinal meningitis. The next eight years I was trying to figure out how to help students,my daughter included, understand math. I remember that she was unable to understand multiplication so I asked her to draw four rows of cabbage and four cabbages in each row. She asked if it would always be 16. I told her yes and from them on we gave concrete models when students could not understand abstractions in Math. I enjoy working through issues with people and seeing them encouraged by the outcome. It develops competence, confidence and independence as they begin to think through issues.
